The Oklahoma Democratic Veterans Federation strongly supports the election of Brandon Wade to the US Congress from Oklahoma District 2. The son of a US Army Vietnam veteran, Brandon knows that today’s military reflects the nation’s diversity, with increasing numbers of women and of traditionally marginalized communities, but with many needs in common. Veterans need help in navigating the VA system: understanding benefits; filing claims and managing appeals. Challenges in health care availability and accessibility need to be met, especially in rural areas and when outside providers are required. Since there are wounds that can be seen and others that can’t, qualified mental health professionals must be readily available in primary care facilities.

Brandon knows that Veterans need educational and employment opportunities, as well as adequate housing. Disabled Veterans face even greater challenges, as do those needing help to regain a sense of purpose after transitioning from mission-oriented service duties. Military families have also sacrificed, and deserve employment opportunities for spouses and welcoming schools for children relocated to a new base.

As a union officer, Brandon understands how to advocate and bargain for better benefits with management and with third-party managed care entities. In Congress, he will bring these skills to bear on behalf of Veterans and service members. Last April, House Republicans proposed cutting the VA budget by 22%, which would have resulted in staff reductions, longer waits for medical appointments, delays in construction of new healthcare facilities and improvement of existing ones, and diminished assistance in obtaining pensions, life insurance, GI Bill benefits, and employment. Even support for our National Cemeteries would have been slashed. Brandon will stand with President Biden in opposing all such measures disrespecting Veterans and military families. He fully deserves our support.
